Farmers

I have noticed during the years of my life spent here on Earth that city people are very different from farmers. Many city people have not seen the myriad characteristics of the farmers. This is a great loss to them because they don’t know what, or who, they are missing. I think I am in a wonderful position to point out these differences, me being a farm girl with many cousins and friends who are city people. I will begin by explaining how city people appear from the farmer perspective, then move onto how the farmers see themselves. I of course cannot get into all the ways that we are different from each other, but I’ll touch on a few things for each group. Contents

Typical Features of City People

(as seen by farmers)

Lazy

I’ve noticed that most city dwellers have a tendency to get up around noon if they have a choice. They also naturally seem to choose jobs that only require them to sit around and type, or possibly stand in one place. They rarely opt for the hard manual labor jobs. They also seem to be addicted to the television, and video or computer games which promotes more sitting and less actual productivity.

Fear of Large Animals

If you put a normal run-of-the-mill city person in a yard with a hundred head of cattle and ask them to simply stand in front of an open gate and not let any cattle out that city person will most likely do one of three things: a.) Run as soon as a heifer comes anywhere near them, thereby freeing one hundred cattle and severely irritating the farmer. b.) Scream! Very loudly! This will cause the cattle to start and possibly harm a nearby farmer, also irritating the farmer. c.) Rarely will the city person actually stand their ground. However when this happens the farmer isn’t irritated. In this instance the farmer is pleased and will let the city person back on their farm.

Fear of Dirt

All children love dirt. Playing in it, eating it, generally having fun with dirt. As they grow up the city kids begin to fear dirt and being dirty. They will freak out if they get any dirt on their clothes and will immediately change them, if this is a feasible option at that point. This is the exact opposite of the farmers, but I’ll get into that later.

Nice Vehicles

The typical city person has one vehicle. And it’s shiny and has all of its original paint. They also wash these vehicles on a semi-regular basis. While city people may not be able to drive them well they seem to love to make them fast and keeping them clean.

Rich

City people all seem to have a lot of money. This comes of them not having to depend on the weather for their money. And the manner in which they spend said money makes very little sense to farmers. They watch movies in the theater, buy technological stuff, and do other weird things too.

Weather

They are totally unaware of the weather and amount of rain that has been falling. How you can go about your life not knowing how much rain fell the night before is totally alien to the farmer mind. Rain and the lack there of is one of the most important things in a farmer’s life.

Now onto the farmers

Morning People

Due to the nature of what they do most farmers are morning people. They get up very early (to a city person at any rate) and begin working. What they do is all dependant on what kind of farm they live on but I’ll leave that for another discussion. Farmers also tend to go to bed earlier. Usually before 9:00 pm. This allows them to get enough sleep to get through their hard days. This of course is only when it isn’t harvest or planting season. These two times are very busy for farmers.

Hard Working

Farmers usually work harder jobs than most city people. Farmers are veterinarians, mechanics, gardeners on a huge scale, exterminators. They can fix almost anything, and commonly do. If a farmer says he will do something, it will get done. This feeds into their work ethics, which are very different than the city person’s.

Vehicles

Very few farmers have any vehicle that has no rust spots, to say nothing of the typical paint jobs. Many farm trucks have two or three different colors of paint, the door one color, the body another, and the hood a third. This isn’t to say that farmers don’t care about their vehicles, just to say they really don’t care what they look like as long as they are running well. Farmers usually own at least 3 vehicles not counting tractors. This accounts for the very early age at which farm kids learn to drive. I personally started when I was about 7.

Dirt

As previously mentioned farmers don’t mind dirt. It is actually a huge struggle to even get farmers to wash their hands before they eat. It’s not so much that they enjoy being dirty as they don’t see dirt. It’s almost like they have selective vision. Another interesting point that fits in here is that they don’t really differentiate between dirt and manure. This really bothers most city people, but farmers just don’t see the point.

These are just a few of the many differences. There really isn’t time or space for me to continue so I think I’ll let things stand as they are. I hope you’ve enjoyed your glimpse into the farmer world.
