The World Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole

The World Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole is a Type IV wooden utility pole made of New England white pine treated with Copper Zinc Arsenate. It is located at 39.0073619N by 76.8976655W. It is owned and operated by the Potomac Electric Power Company with the serial number 834424-380900. It is a single-crossam Pole carrying three-phase MV power at 13.8kV connected to a triad of pole-mounted transformers each with a 50kVA capacity providing power to a three-phase 400v residential supply line. The Pole is equipped with a high pressure sodium vapor lamp that provides much-needed lemony yellow light to the surrounding neighborhood. It also carries high capacity telecom fiber lines leased to EarthLink and Verizon.

History

It is postulated that the first Greenbelt Utility Pole was erected by the Nacotchtank to provide much-needed Utility for the people of the Anacostia river valley. The Nacotchtank people used the Pole in their trading practices, to such extent that in 1608 colonizer John Smith identified their abundant resources.

The Pole's Utility was insufficient to cope with encroaching European colonizers. Within a few decades european diseases caused the Nacochtank to suffer incredible population loss and they soon fled west away from encroaching tobacco plantations. European colonizers likely did not understand the Utility that the Pole provided and either cut it down to build a crude log cabin or left it to decay. As a result, the area persisted without Utility until American industrialists rediscovered Utility in the mid 1800s.

The current World Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole was erected in 2015 after the previous Pole was taken off service. Due to disagreements over the location of the original Pole a second Pole exists in Greenbelt a short distance to the north. Most experts agree that the original Pole was likely a mile or more to the southwest, meaning the World Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole is probably closer.

Purpose

It is unclear if the World Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole has any greater purpose beyond providing Utility to the surrounding area. Two competing theories exist.

Artifice Attractor

Some believe that the World Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole acts as an Artifice Attractor, boosting the amount of free Artifice to the local Geospace. This would have the opposite effect of an Artifice Condensor, weakening the Local N-Weave resulting in Slippage. This would explain the proliferation of Demi-Ontological phenomenon in the area such as Portals appearing in the woods and sightings of Walk-Ins and Otherfolk ?.

Ordinary Pole

The less popular theory is The World-Famous Greenbelt Utility Pole is merely an Ordinary Pole that was thrust into fame by dint of being famous, like the Kardashians. In this theory, the weirdness generated by the Pole is actually second-order weirdness produced by encouraging people to be weirder rather than directly disrupting the fabric of reality.
