Enter Virtual Reality

As the machine life-forms strap you down into the pod where your body will lay for the rest of your life, you smile. You should have thought of this ages ago. What better way to avoid physical discomfort than to leave your physical form behind?

"It's going to be so nice," you say, "No more aches or pains. A realm of pure mind awaits."

The machine life-forms glance at each other. One says, "Uh, actually, our simulation includes pain and discomfort. Human minds refuse to accept the illusion if the world isn't exactly as they expect it to be.

"What-" you start to say, but at that moment an eight inch data spike drives itself into the newly installed port on the back of your neck. You feel like you're screaming and drowning simultaneously, but then as soon as it starts it's over.

You're standing in an abandoned building in an abandoned neighborhood in a vast, endless city. If you didn't know this was a simulation being fed to your brain you'd never know. Dust motes float in sunbeams slanting through the boarded up windows. The old leather sofa creaks under your touch.

Your tummy aches. Damn those machines.
